The following ode written by Colley Cibber, Esq; and set to
musick by Dr. Greene, Master of the King's Band of Musick,
was on Monday last performed before his Majesty in the Old
Council Chamber at St. James's.
  RECITATIVE BY MR. SAVAGE.
When glory with a painful eye,
Saw frighted peace from Europe fly;
While stern ambition stalk'd along,
With desolation in her throng;
The Goddess, who delights to spare,
Complaining, thus disclaims the war.
  AIR.
Is war my sceper'd [?] sons your joy?
Must you be cruel to be brave?
Does glory tell you to destroy?
Has more of Godlike than to save?
  TRIO, by Mr. Wass, and by Mr. Beard:
O hear the groaning earth's complaint!
Ah! let the promis'd Virgin's prayer,
The mourning matron's tear,
Convert the soldier to the saints.
  RECITATIVE, by Mr. Menee,
Ambition, conscious, bears the sound;
Compassion in her bosom glows;
Subdu'd by glory to respose,
She now enjoys what arms confound.
  AIR.
Behold! behold in Caesar's hand,
The sceptre with the olve wreath'd
Recovers to the rightful land
The fruits that nature's will bequeath'd.
Not the pacific dove, that flew,
Back to the floating world reliev'd.
  CHORUS.
Not the pacific dove, etc.
Such hulcien days on elder Rome bestow'd
Have rais'd their fam'd Augustus to a God.
  RECITATIVE, by Mr. Beard.
Behold a title yet
More Christianly compleat!
Of more sublime degree!
By glorious truth approv'd
The Monarch most belov'd,
Remains, Augustus George, to thee;
As all, enjoin'd us from above,
Is, that the power we praise, we love.
  AIR.
So shall immortal fame
Adorn his deathless name
In future story.
  CHORUS.
While truth divine shall shew,
To proudest powers below,
The only praise deserv'd, is glory.
